How to Prepare Your Pet's Travel Crate: IATA safety guide

The travel crate is your pet's home for the journey. Airlines reject crates that do not meet IATA Live Animals Regulations — so getting this right matters.

Choosing the right size

Your pet must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down naturally without touching the top of the crate. Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, and from floor to top of head or ear tip (whichever is higher).

Acclimation tips

  • Introduce the crate 2–4 weeks before travel
  • Place familiar bedding and a worn item of your clothing inside
  • Feed treats in the crate to build positive associations
  • Practice short sessions with the door closed, gradually increasing duration

Day-of-travel checklist

  • Secure water bowl (many airlines require a drip-feed bottle)
  • Absorbent bedding — no straw or loose materials
  • "Live Animal" labels on all sides
  • Contact details attached to the crate exterior
